South Africa Travel With Children Teenagers

More and more busy parents discover that traveling by South Africa with (small) children and teenagers is very fun. Children are curious and look at the world in a different way. In South Africa you combine an adventure trip with a relaxing holiday. We have made a separate website for South Africa traveling with children: South Africa Kids .

South Africa is more modern and safer than many people think. The infrastructure is good and the comfort is on a western level. Travel by car at your own pace along the highlights, go bushing in the bush, cycling through the vineyards and whale potholes offshore.

You are sleeping in a mix of accommodations: a safari tent in the bush, an ostrich farm, a Victorian hotel in Cape Town or a Cape Dutch winery. We take into account the wishes you have as a family: spacious apartments or family rooms, often a swimming pool, and a not too full program, but a good balance between driving, resting and out in nature.

As of June 1, 2015, you are required to bring English translation of the original birth certificate from every child up to 17 years old. This asks you at the municipality where the child was born. Do you travel alone with your child or with a composite family? Often children get the surname of their father, so that their last name differs from that of the mother. When you travel as a mother alone with your children you should bring the following:

English translation of your original birth certificate
copy of the father’s passport with a signature on it
copy of the judgment of the judge on parental authority
statement in English
For children of divorced parents

As a parent, when traveling with your children, you must get written permission from the other parent. You can download a form for this. Use this form as a guideline for your letter of consent (in English, this is called Parental Consent Affidavit) or fill in the form. Download the permission form here .

Please note: this form must be signed by the person who gives permission. Next, the document must be checked for authenticity at a municipal office or notary. In English, this is also called a ‘Commissioner of Oaths’. The person giving permission must be present. This document will then be stamped or signed as proof. Even if you have the same surname, they check very strictly here. It is therefore important to bring the correct papers. They do not hesitate to send you back with the first flight home so prepare yourself well. Call us in case of doubt.

Finally, you must also have a flight ticket with confirmed return or flight to access South Africa.

Here you will find the most current information about the regulations for traveling with children to South Africa.

The above information applies only to travelers with a Dutch passport; If you have a passport from another country, then other rules may apply. Then contact the South African Embassy to check which rules apply to your nationality.
